When you look at a new canvas, how do you mentally deconstruct their features to decide where to highlight and where to create depth? G: After 12 years, it becomes instinctual. I immediately read bone structure, symmetry, and how light naturally interacts with the face. I’m not applying makeup—I’m engineering dimension. I decide where to lift, where to sharpen, and where to soften, all while respecting the integrity of the face. It’s a calculated process, but the result should never feel calculated. IN: Toronto is a massive global hub for diversity and style. How does the energy of your home city inform the “eye” through which you create your most iconic looks? G: Toronto has trained my eye to be adaptable. You’re working with every skin tone, every face shape, every cultural reference—and that forces you to really understand beauty instead of applying a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s also a city that loves glam, but in its own way—polished, confident, and quietly luxurious. That energy is definitely in my work.IN: In an industry that is often trend-driven, your execution remains remarkably precise. How do you balance the rigid demands of technical skill with the need to make a subject feel “alive” and effortless?G: Technique is the foundation—it’s non-negotiable. But once that’s locked in, it’s about restraint. Knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing what to add. I want the person to still feel like themselves, just elevated. If it starts to feel heavy or forced, I pull back. Effortless is actually very intentional. IN: Makeup is often a psychological experience for the client. What is the one core “feeling” you strive to give your subjects the moment they look in the mirror after you’ve finished your work? G: Confidence. Not just “I look good,” but “I feel powerful.” I want them to see themselves and feel like the best version of who they already are—not someone else entirely. That shift in energy is everything. When someone sits in my chair, it’s not just about how they look when they leave—it’s about how they carry themselves after. IN: There’s a specific magic in how you handle skin and texture that a digital edit just can’t replicate. In an era of ‘perfection’ by AI, what is your philosophy on keeping your looks feeling both flawless and authentically human? G: Real skin will always win. Texture, dimension, the way light reflects naturally—you can’t fake that in a way that feels real. I focus on building skin in layers so it looks perfected but never flat. I’m not chasing filtered perfection, I’m creating something that looks just as good in real life as it does on camera. My approach is layered, controlled, and intentional so the result is flawless without ever looking artificial.
